Periods at 40 — drastic changes await
Let's face it; pads are kind of gross. I miss tampons. Tampons are cleaner, more discreet and they allow you to do things you can't do with a pad, for example, swim, wear tight dresses and exercise freely (FACT: squats are not fun with pads). I remember thinking in my early thirties that mother nature would never be so cruel to me. I was wrong.
I now realize that my tampon-wearing days are long gone (if you're leaning toward your 40's you know what I mean). Late last year, while traveling around Europe for nearly a month, I made one last-ditch effort to use tampons — it was a total disaster!
Cutting to the chase, since turning 40, I realize how age impacts your reproductive system. For starters, your hormones are wacky, fluids aren't as plentiful, and I personally need to be extra careful about UTI's, candida and bacteria. Unless you're in the position of having a steady flow and little potential for infections, tampons along with menstrual cups (like the Diva Cup), IUDs and diaphragms are pretty risky. With all this new-age stuff, I would also add the yoni egg to this list — sorry goop!
What I've found is that menstrual cups and these non-disposable methods are an issue for those of us who get infections. It's nearly impossible to stay on top of sanitizing these things. Another important fact about menstrual cups that isn't well communicated, the cups are made to sit snugly in the vaginal canal. However, if your cervix sits low it could dip into the cup where everything collects —this is a no-no for women who have recurring issues.
So, while I still have my period for the foreseeable future (thank goodness, I'm not ready to deal with menopause), I was desperate to find better options. I was really surprised when I found Asana’s Biowave Advantage™. They are soft, incorporate technology that kills bacteria, do not smell like bleach and last longer than drugstore options. I'm so impressed by these pads. They are a little pricey, but for the comfort during that time of the month, it's worth it. If you've had difficulty with a particularly runny period you'll find the night pads to be a total gem.
Here's a little blurb from their website:
"It represents the first major advance in sanitary napkins in a generation. The Biowave Advantage™ layer combines the proven health-promoting properties of natural minerals – and advances in nano-technology — in a patented application designed to help women feel fresher, more energetic and more confident. Health Canada has classified the Biowave Advantage™ layer as a Medical Device Class 1 (antibacterial). Independent testing by SGS Group, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification organization, has certified the Biowave Advantage™ layer as 99.99% effective on the bacteria escherichia coli, staphylococcus aureus, and a common yeast, candida."
No matter where I am, I'm always prepared with these puppies. I can't and won't go back to those other options.
